[EP 12] Shunta Grant of Because of Zoe on How She Used Instagram to Build Her Empire and Quit Her Job as an Attorney

Shunta Grant is the creator and owner of Because of Zoe Designs (affectionately known as BOZ), a design brand specializing in modern handmade accessories for girls and women.

Shunta began Because of Zoe while practicing law full time at a regional law firm in Greenville, South Carolina. After realizing that she loved to style her daughter, Zoe, in headbands and hair bows, Shunta took to creating her own and when she had left over materials from making Zoe’s hair bows, she began selling them through Instagram. In her first sale on Instagram, Shunta sold over nine hundred dollars worth of bows in less than 45 minutes. Each Instagram sale resulted in higher sales and the popularity of the bows grew beyond Shunta’s imagination as she watched her products sell out each time.

After seeing the success of her products and receiving an array of positive feedback from customers, Shunta began to think about Because of Zoe as more than a beloved pastime and began to work toward turning her passion into a business that would allow her life to better reflect her personal priorities and life goals. The dream of the freedom to be the mom, wife, daughter and friend that she wanted to be was the push she needed to grow Because of Zoe into a sustainable business. Shunta developed an online web presence for Because of Zoe and began to focus on growing a loyal customer base and entering into retail relationships with stockists.

Because of Zoe Designs is currently sold in three retail locations and is projected to more than quadruple its retail reach within 2016. Because of Zoe has been featured in two magazines, receiving a twopage spread in each, and currently has a social media following of over fourteen thousand.

When it came time to select a name for the business, Because of Zoe was a natural and easy choice for Shunta. Although this business began as creating hair bows her daughter, it has grown to be much more. Because of her daughter, Shunta realizes how important it is to spend her days, her time, her life doing not only something that she loves, but something that loves her back.

In September 2015, Shunta left the firm and became a successful full time entrepreneur. In addition to continuing to grow and expand Because of Zoe Designs, Shunta launched Because of Zoe BIZ, an innovative business development and consulting platform, where she teaches and counsels women entrepreneurs in an effort to encourage them to define and discover their freedom in business. Knowing how amazing life is beyond the “9 to 5,” Shunta strives to empower and help women achieve the entrepreneur life.
